🛠️ How I Made a Magical Deep‑Sea Manta Ray Resin Night Light

🛠️ How I Made a Magical Deep‑Sea Manta Ray Resin Night Light

Epoxy resin and wood are two of my favourite materials to work with. When you combine the natural beauty of olive wood with the crystal‑clear depth of resin, you can create something truly magical — like this glowing manta ray lamp.

✨ The Idea

I wanted to capture the quiet beauty of the deep ocean: the soft blue light, floating bubbles, and the graceful movement of a manta ray gliding through the water. Every piece is one‑of‑a‑kind, handmade with care right here in our workshop.

🪵 Step‑by‑Step Creation

1. Preparing the Wood
I start by carving away loose, damaged parts of the olive wood, then sand away dark spots to reveal its beautiful natural grain. I split the block carefully — enough to make two lamps from one piece of timber.

2. Building the Mold
I use clear tape on the base to stop resin sticking, then build a sturdy frame with wooden strips. I use a mix of strong adhesive and hot glue for security, then seal every gap to prevent leaks.

3. Adding Details
Preserved moss goes onto the wood, then I seal it with a thin coat of tinted resin. I carefully place the tiny manta ray figure, positioning it exactly where I want it to swim.

4. Pouring the Magic
I mix epoxy resin with shades of deep ocean blue and teal. Pouring slowly along a stick helps avoid air bubbles — I pop any remaining bubbles with a lighter before covering it to cure.

5. Sanding & Polishing
After 3 full days of curing, I remove the mold and sand from coarse 80‑grit all the way up to ultra‑fine 3000‑grit wet sanding. Wood wax protects the timber, then polishing brings the resin to a glass‑like shine.

6. Final Assembly
I attach the finished piece to a 12V LED light base — and when it lights up, the ocean scene comes alive ✨
💛 Why This Piece Matters

Every mark, every colour shift, every tiny bubble is part of the story. This lamp isn’t just decor — it’s a little piece of the ocean you can bring into your space.
